How To Avoid Getting Your Name Used In Facebook Ads – 3 Simple Steps

I talked to a friend yesterday who told me that he was tired of having his page likes (mis)used in the sponsored stories on Facebook. But he had no idea how he could stop this involuntary selection as today’s campaign model.

You might have noticed the sponsored stories as well. They are featured on the right side of your Newsfeed just above the ads and reads something like “Jane liked Nike” or “John used Zoosk”. The twist however, is that unlike other ads on Facebook these feature some of your friends making the ads more eye-catching and somewhat more reliable.

The average Page likes per Facebook user is 40; this number however, is significantly higher in U.S. where the average is a staggering 70 likes. Unless you are extremely orderly it is hard keeping track with your Page likes especially as many Page owners have used the “like” as a factor for participating in competitions – which, by the way, violates Facebook roles – but that is a entirely other subject of itself. Even-though you Liked a Page two years ago you could find yourself in a sponsored story telling everyone you know that you Liked a grocery store or that you used a certain app.

If you are not comfortable being today´s campaign model you can easily change your privacy settings so you will not be a part of the sponsored stories any more. I have made this 3-step guide to help you change your settings. Please leave me a comment telling me if you already have changed your settings and what you think of sponsored stories – do they work?
